Position Summary

Based in Riverside, California
Full-Time Hourly/Non-exempt

The Underwriter is responsible for assisting the Operations Manager and lending in the execution of all strategies inclusive of processing and underwriting of first Conventional (FNMA/FHLMC), VA, FHA, USDA, Bond, portfolio and subordinate mortgages or grants, data entry, some customer contact, onboarding loans, file follow-up and in-depth document review either in a retail, wholesale or correspondent environment. This individual will work proactively to provide customer service to loan originators and clients to accurately and timely (within guidelines) facilitate all Springboard CDFI’s loan programs and services.

Qualifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma with a minimum of 5 years of recent work experience in an Underwriting position holding valid FHA DE (Direct Endorsement) designation (CHUMS #), a VA LAPP, Auto and SAR designation, and a thorough understanding of FNMA/FHLMC guidelines. Sales Force skills is a plus.
  • Proven technical skills to include knowledge with Microsoft Office Suite, Encompass, basic understanding of AUS systems (FNMA/FHLMC) FHA, VA guidelines, processing, underwriting, credit, appraisal, income and asset requirements, as well as understanding of “HOW” to read and interpret AUS messaging.
  • Expert-level knowledge of overall mortgage lending processes, including underwriting, funding, and loan processing; valid documentation related to the processing consumer mortgage applications (e.g., tax returns, financial statements and records, verification of income and deposits, etc.); underwriting and regulatory requirements; detailed knowledge of federal, state, and regulatory requirements/guidelines related to consumer mortgage lending and internal processes and controls.
  • Expert-level knowledge of overall mortgage lending processes, including underwriting, funding, and loan processing; valid documentation related to the processing consumer mortgage applications (e.g., tax returns, financial statements and records, verification of income and deposits, etc.); underwriting and regulatory requirements; detailed knowledge of federal, state, and regulatory requirements/guidelines related to consumer mortgage lending and internal processes and controls.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for accurate data entry and file input into LOS system (Encompass) with review and evaluation of loan documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness with company standards; federal / state and agency standards and guidelines.
  • Manage relationship with clients, lenders and co-workers to facilitate timely and accurate files and closings.
  • Adhere to all federal and state lending laws, lender and government guidelines to include, but not be limited to, privacy, TRID, RESPA and Fair Lending procedures.
  • Pipeline management, analysis of client LTV/CLTV (full file underwriting) and supporting documentation to identify potential fraud or misrepresentation, updating and tracking via LOS system.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally to clients, Lenders, Investors and co-workers, working collaboratively with team in order to understand all P&P’s.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge and analysis of income documentation, guidelines and accepted industry knowledge, title issues (reports), credit, escrow instructions, HOA, appraisal and insurance as related to loan underwriting and investor requirements; staying abreast of current regulations and industry trends that affect compliance and decision-making.
  • Determine if additional documentation or information would aid in loan decision; request additional documentation accordingly.
  • Responsible for ordering credit reports, supplements and updates if needed; verifying system input is accurate and company systems match Automated Underwriting System (AUS).
  • Provide options and recommendations to borrowers regarding suitable loan programs.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
